![]() Eagles The eagles rescued Thorin Oakenshield and Company from a band of Wargs and Goblins, flying them to the river Anduin, and later assisting in the Battle of the Five Armies fought near Lonely Mountain. Thorin was best known for his deeds as leader of a company that infiltrated the lost Kingdom under the Mountain to take it back from Smaug and for leading an alliance of Men, Dwarves, and Elves in the Battle of the Five Armies. Beorn provided shelter to Thorin Oakenshield and his Company of Dwarves (12 others), Hobbit (Bilbo Baggins), and Wizard (Gandalf), and later helped them fight against an army of Goblins at the Battle of the Five Armies Thorin Thorin II, also called the Oakenshield, King under the Mountain or the Mountain King,was the son of Thráin II, the older brother of Frerin and Dís, the grandson of King Thrór and the uncle of Fíli and Kíli. Beorn kept many animals at his residence, such as horses and dogs. Beorn Beorn was a warrior with great strength, who could turn into a great black bear. When the dwarves refused to give any treasure to Bard, Bilbo snuck out with the Arkenstone and gave it to Bard in hopes that Bard could bargain with Thorin. Such did he consider its value that he was willing to trade 1/14th of all the gold and silver of Smaug's hoard for it. ![]() Arkenstone The Arkenstone was a gem, the most prized object by Thorin Oakenshield of all the treasure of Lonely Mountain. After the battle, Dain thanked the Eagles for their timely intervention, crowning their chief with gold and swearing the dwarves to everlasting friendship with them. He arrived just in time for the Battle of the Five Armies. ![]() Dáin marched with five hundred Dwarven soldiers, exceptionally strong even by dwarven standards, clad in heavy armor and iron boots, and armed with mattocks, shields, and broadswords. Dain Dáin (son of Nain) was the friend and cousin of Thorin Oakenshield, and responded to Thorin's call for help during the quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain.
